Negative space is the area between and around the subject in a photo. This relationship between positive and negative space is imperative to creating an image that is visually interesting.

Architect Le Corbusier once said:

“Space and light and order. Those are the things that men need just as much as they need bread or a place to sleep.”

Next time you take a photo, give your subject some space, don’t simply fill the frame right to the edges – that’s lazy. Think about your composition and how it will effect the image.

On Saturday we met up to explore how using the negative space in different ways enhances the subject.
